The new oil is here!

Connecting through stories of food, tradition, and community

Ciao !

The new olive oil is here from Sicily and it's unfiltered, highly aromatic, buttery, spicy...and absolutely delicious. And full of healthful properties! In Italy, good olive oil is considered a condiment as well as a foundational ingredient, it is basically its own food group.

We encourage you to first smell the new oil, you smell the green tomato, the earth, the depth and all the work that went into producing it. We encourage you to next taste the oil on its own, preferably in a plastic spoon or a small glass bowl; if using a bowl allow the oil to warm a bit by holding it in your hand.

The babies are here and they're adorable!

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO JOINED US FOR OUR FETTUNTA!

ESPECIALLY TO CIAO RISTORANTE AND JENNIFER AND MADDIE WHO TOOK SUCH GOOD CARE OF US.

My Italian teacher (and friend, for whom I hold great affection) Grazia read our last email and it prompted her to share her own story of growing up with olive oil in Abruzzo, Italy. Like many families hers produced their own olive oil each year. Her words are below...

"For me, bread and oil is the snack of my childhood—it’s what I eat at my parents' house (drizzled with our family oil) when it’s too late to cook, I’m hungry, I don’t feel like preparing anything, and so on. In an Italian home, bread, oil, and salt are never in short supply. In the summer, this transforms into bread, oil, and tomato.

The customers of Oliva Bella may not have their own lifelong history with olive oil, but I would love to know how they are creating one now.

And here is the point: You are the one bridging the tradition of bread and oil in Italy with this new experience for your customers."

Her story gave us the idea (okay, it was HER idea...) to ask, How do YOU Oliva Bella? Do you have favorite ways of using Oliva Bella olive oil in your daily lives? We would LOVE to know!

ONE WAY I OLIVA BELLA

When we started importing extra virgin olive oils 22 years ago, I thought my parents would be the last to embrace it.

WRONG.

A family tradition was choosing our favorite cake on our birthdays, mine was always carrot cake. My mother's was always amazing.

One year my Dad decided it was too dry. He doused his slice with Oliva Bella olive oil.

It was spectacularly delicious!

And has been their and my own tradition ever since.

THIS is my ITALY...by way of Kentucky.

Carrot cake

My Dad made the mistake of telling my Mother that her cake was dry; however, she adopted the tradition as well. And started making the cake with Oliva Bella Oliva Oil as an ingredient.

— To quote Gianfranco, a friend in Palermo who always gifts me when I leave, and to whom I always ask what may I bring him upon my return…
